Andy (V)
Every now and than a certain chain of events never fails to make me wonder "how come my life like that???" and a good example is Andy.
Back in secondary school, i was in a great ECA and hung out with a great bunch of friends. In addition, i had numerous friends from the same batch, kinda like one big happy family. The time of my life, going to school never seemed boring, it was even sometimes exciting!
Being active and occasionally displaying some leadership qualities i was involved in numerous events. Than came the December holidays when i was.. secondary 2, or was it secondary 3..
it was a real busy holiday, events packed back to back.
First was the Student Councils Camp (in some schools better known as Prefectorial Board). The entire student council merged together and later spilt into smaller groups to work together and bond. Crap aside, it was through the camp that i got to know this guy my age called Andy. Andy and i have been in the same school for.. i think 3years but yet have never really came in contact before. Always in different classes and ECAs that didnt meet, we hardly even crossed each others paths.
There he lay beside me that night. On square metal classroom tables along the side windows of the classroom. Somehow he didnt really mix well with the others but he managed to click with me. So we chatted a little before we started to doze off. He lay on my left, on my right were the noisier bunch, all quiet now. The room was quiet. Fans whirling, bugs chirping... me dozing....
what felt like a finger touched my left shoulder. Half a sleep but very aware of what was going on, a real cold shiver went down my spine, which later literally pulsed tru and throughout my body over and over. My mind was screaming WHAT WAS GOING ON?!
the finger was cold, and a second later a second finger, a third, a fourth and later an entire hand collasped onto my shoulder, grabbing me tightly. My body was totally numb. It just felt so wrong! i sprang up from my slumber, and the hand was gone. For the first time in my life i wanted to scream, or at least make some kinda noise but nothing came out. In total shock i looked around. Everybody was sleeping. Andy on my left was slumped facing away from me, both his hands cushioning his face. It cant be him, he wouldnt do such a thing aniway. I looked at the rowdy bunch on my right. All asleep. Unconvinced, i shook the one directly beside me up. But he was really asleep and only managed to ask me not to be paranoid sheepishly.
Damn, my heart was still in my thoart and pounding my body. I lay back down. Afraid, but somehow managed to fall asleep soon enough.
(in the events in my life.. this was one of the scariest encounters)
aniway enough about that, after the 3day student coucil camp was the peer support committee's leadership programme for Primary 5 kids. I played the role of one of the coordinators and guess what, Andy was there again. when we saw each other we exclaimed "again?".
the leaderhip camp was another 3 days and i tell you, Primary 5 kids are full of energy and so easy to amuse. At the end of it all, it was really fufilling when they asked us to sign their autograph books (its been a long time...even in secondary school we kinda don't do that anymore) and more so when they wrote nice comments and placed them in our "letter boxes" asking for email adresses and saying thank you and some lame msges to the tune of "i find you very cute..."
that being that, Andy and I kinda surpassed being just friends at the end of the 6day "ordeal" it almost seems like we were the best of friends. A bond much stronger than friends in school i had known since the first weeks... Wierd...
the next they was a chalet organized by a group of girls and i was invitied. Being at East Coast, the first impression was "huh.. so boring" but i tell you. It is one of the wisest places and one of the best chalets i enjoyed. Why? because when you don't have bowling, arcades, lan and all that to go to, you really participate in group activities the whole day. Real man to man bonding sessions.
And guess who i further bonded then... Andy!... it was really unexpected that someone i have never spoken to was coincidentally involved in 3 back to back activities over a stretch of days. We behaved immediately like the best of buddies and some of the girls were even curious how we got to know each other.
at the end of it all.. we decided to become "brothers", like so many other crazy things we do in secondary school. And till this day, Andy is still one of the closest friends i have. The kinda friend whom you might not meet up for half a year, or the type u can meet up every week. Someone you don't have to come in contact with but yet you know he is always there for you.
My secondary school friends fade... but my bond with Andy has always been so strong. its been 4 years now? and i guess Andy is one of the reasons i believe.. fate does exist.. life works in an interesting clockwork....
